2006年: Went to Sichuan and Tibet Province. At a height close to 5000 meters, he painted in plateau areas such as Yading, Daocheng and Litang.
Having been suffered from plateau pneumochysis for five days, Sherman Lin was attacked by acute left heart failure, which almost took his life away.
After Lin recovered, he wrote a book entitled “Dare or Not”, interpreting the meaning of life anew with art languages.

2006年: 往川藏地区，在海拔接近5000米的亚丁、稻城、理塘一带高原地区采风，出现肺水肿,病情持续五天，后患急性左心衰竭，几乎失去性命,病愈后著《不知天高地厚》，以艺术语言重新思索生命意义；

1992年至今年年: 身兼设计师，坚持教学与艺术创作；
任中央美术学院外籍教授；主持集美组设计机构，从事建筑和室内设计；此时期的林学明游历世界各地，不断积淀艺术造诣；

1992年: Engaged in teaching, art creation and design.
Working as Creative Director of Newsdays, Lin has been participating in architecture and interior design. During this period, he constantly travels around the world, accumulating artistic attainments.

Sherman Lin had traveled between Canada, America and all over the world, paying full attention to the development of contemporary art.

1987年: 八十年代正逢中国留学风潮，在美术学院任教的林学明无继续在体制内发展之意，在与家人道别后独身自费赴美留学，同年加入美国加州洛杉矶当代艺术家协会；同年多次参加洛杉矶当代艺术作品展览，在现当代艺术中探索，对抽象艺术创作进行深入的研究和思考；

1987年: China witnessed the up-rise trend of studying abroad in the 1980s. As a teacher in Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Sherman Lin determined to seek for some development outside the system. He thereby left his family for America at his own expense. The same year, Lin joined the Los Angeles Contemporary Art Association with his artworks being exhibited in Los Angeles Contemporary Art Exhibition for many times. Deeply influenced by contemporary art, Lin began his profound research and thinking on abstract art creation.

1984年: 参与创办并主持广州美术学院集美设计中心；林学明深感设计是20世纪艺术之极其重要的组成部分，尽管遇到很多困难，仍坚持拓进“大美术”的理念；

1984年: Identity beyond artist – designer.Participated in and managed Newsdays Design Center of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.Sherman Lin was fully aware of the significance of design as a component of art in 20th century.Despite all the difficulties, Lin still devoted to the promotion of the ideal of “comprehensive arts”.

1983年: 黑陶雕塑《水鸟》获全国陶瓷设计作品银奖；林学明透过对原始传统艺术图符的研究，以写意抽象的手法提炼塑造形象，个人表现特征鲜明独特，为抽象艺术表现探索打下基础；

1983年: Black Pottery Water Bird won Silver Medal for National Pottery Design Competition.Through his research in traditional art icons, Sherman Lin simplified and created images through abstract form of expression, showing a unique and impressive personal character, which built a good foundation for his abstract art exploration.

1982年: 毕业前被分配到广州美术学院，任助教、讲师；
在校任教期间到湖南长沙窑，挖掘工艺美术的历史文化，从事陶艺创作；

1982年: Specified by name by Gao Yongjian, Lin was assigned to Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts as a professor assistant and lecturer.
While he worked as a teacher, he visited Changsha Kiln in Hunan Province to find out the history and cultural background of arts and crafts by participating in pottery creation.

1977年: 高考得到恢复，就读文革结束后第一届北京中央工艺美术学院77级；
在张仃、吴冠中、郑可等老师的影响下，接受本土与西方的美术思潮教育；

1977年: Entered China Central Academy of Art and Crafts (77’) in Beijing after college entrance examination in China was restored.
Influenced by teachers such as Zhang Ding, Wu Guanzhong and Zheng Ke, Lin began to accept influences from local and western aesthetic trends.

1954年: 林学明出生于中国广东省四会市，在以华侨为背景的家庭中成长；自小开始思考中外文化的交汇点和差异性；

1954年: Sherman Lin was born into a family with overseas background in Sikuai, Guangdong Province.Such a background enables him to think about the similarity and difference between Chinese culture and other cultures since a young age.
