“等风来”王义明的艺术行动

张扬的“幡”

至今为止,我觉得已经不能用一个概念去概括王义明的艺术实践了,他本人作为一个艺术行动者,通过不间断的、持续的推动,让艺术像有机体自我生长那样,经历了一个又一个阶段,而后一个阶段又是包括了前一个阶段的体认,同时,前一个阶段已经蕴含着未来的因子。

在最开始的时候,王义明的目标是去旷野,去西北,去西藏高原,在高山湖泊中落实一种气势。然后,他发现了一种因缺氧而造成的冲动,他发现这一冲动非缺氧而不可。这样一来,王义明的写生,与其说是在画面上行云流水,不如说以画面为载体,让一种情绪获得重新的形状。于是就有了一系列的西藏的绘画。

在这里,缺氧甚至比涂抹还重要。

An Audacious Sail
Commentary by Yang Xiao Yan

I believe it is no longer possible to place Wang Yiming’s work within one art category or style alone. As an artistic agent, through uninterrupted momentum, his work has begun to take on a life of its own. Like the invisible pull of the tides, one current after another, each stage encompassing the previous, past experience becomes a predication and indication of future moments.

In the beginning, Wang Yiming merely sought to immerse himself in the northwestern land, the wilderness, and the Tibetan plateaus, seeking new heights in the great mountain lakes. Yet, it was in this environment where he discovered a new kind of velocity, an adrenaline powered by the lack of oxygen, an asphyxiating high that governed and drove his work to the next extreme. Gathering this kind of hypoxic momentum, the landscapes of Wang Yiming can no longer be defined by form. The soaring quality of Tibetan shifting clouds reaches new bliss. The canvas becomes a medium that is fueled by cathartic intensity. Thereby emerges a series of Tibetan paintings that runs on the horsepower of asphyxia.

Here, the absence of oxygen is more cardinal than painting itself.

目标也在这一每年持续的行动中得以明确:原来,他强烈地希望能够面对圣山,面对人类的第一高峰,做一次深沉的呼吁。这是一个挥之不去的梦想。他的设想是,不是他一个人在现场,而是,有很多志同道合者,很多艺术家朋友,很多哥们姐们,一起面对神圣本身而祷告。画作只是一种中介,一种张扬在上苍的旗帜。王义明把这一行为命名为“幡”。

The impulse grows illuminant year after year – Wang aspires to face the saintliness of the mountain peaks head on, to challenge and call upon the primary and fundamental provocation of humankind. This is a lingering dream. His vision is to be in the company of like-minded people and fellow artists, to pray in the face of divinity itself. And painting is merely an intermediary, a flying banner that meditates on, mirrors, and ultimately celebrates the celestial scale of the divine. ?Wang Yiming calls this act Sail, or Flags.

开始是行为艺术,现在变成众人介入的艺术,一种表达群体意志的艺术。2018年,王义明被邀请参与一个公共项目,把他的“幡”立定在一处庄园的草坪上。

What began as performance art has transformed into an open invitation that calls upon the collective. In 2018, Wang Yiming was invited to a publicly witnessed event—to place and set sail his flags in the meadows of an estate.

如果作品在现场完成,也许意义就仅仅局限于公共。王义明本能地意识到,最后竖立起来的“幡”,其实只是一连串行动的结果而已。他的行动是,率领一群哥们又一次来到青藏高原,又一次在苍穹下,在田野上,一起在巨大的画布上起舞狂奔。这画面不仅成为最后张挂起来的真实意义上的“幡“,而且让人们在“幡”面前沉思过往的一切。

If the work is completed on-site, perhaps this implies that it is constrained by the public nature of the act. Yet, Wang Yiming realizes that the catharsis of these ‘banners staked into the land is merely the result of a series of movements, a desire to lead a group of buddies to the Tibet Plateau, to waltz wildly upon the huge canvas, celebrating the infinite expanse of the sky. ?This image not only represents the last ‘sail’ anchoring the series, but invites the viewer to reflect on the past.

这是艺术生成的一个关键节点,在这一节点上,王义明成为了引领者,让参与的哥们同时在阳光中暴晒平日深藏不露的灵魂。

This is a critical juncture in the creation of art—at this crossroads, Wang Yiming becomes a leading voice, gathering his friends to witness the hidden souls in the sun.

作品还在行走,因为王义明并没有停下他的步伐。2019年他跨越浩瀚的太平洋,来到北美大陆,来到温哥华。在温哥华,王义明的“幡”切割成零碎的存在,但表皮却因再次创作而意义非凡。在这里,“幡”的意义是,它在游走中自动完成自我的使命。

The work is still ongoing, as Wang Yiming has not stopped his tread. ?In 2019, he traveled across the pacific to North America, to Vancouver. In Vancouver, Wang Yiming’s ‘Sail’ experienced refragmentation and takes on a new meaning. Here, the act of ‘sailing’ is to complete its purpose.

现在,王义明又出发了,但这一次是,在他的意念中,一次典礼,神圣而热情,在西藏,在世界屋脊,在最接近苍天的地点,完成一次心愿,完成一次行动,不是一个人的,不仅眼前有众多的哥们姐们,而且,在张扬的背后,还有很多默然而明亮的眼睛,正盯着他的又一次行动。因为,众人内心的“幡”借此而高扬。

等着瞧吧!

Now, Wang Yiming has set on a journey once again, but this time, his vision is to embark on a ceremony, sacred and passionate, to venture beyond the edge of the earth known to the bare eye. It is to complete a wish, an action, not only for himself but in the company of fellow artists, and in the company of the public. Many eyes are watching his next move.
